GLEN ELLYN, IL — Glen Ellyn officials will vote Monday on a special use permit and zoning variations to facilitate construction of the village's new Metra station and pedestrian tunnel at 545-581 Crescent Blvd.
The special use permit will allow for the construction of a public service facility and public utility in the village's Conservation/Recreation District and the construction of a public parking lot in an area zoned as a central business sub-district.
The requested zoning variations apply to parking stall lengths and front and rear yard setbacks.
Plans for the new station have been in motion since 2024, when a pre-application meeting was held. The village's architectural commission approved the final designs in July 2026. At its Sept. 24 public hearing, the planning commission voted unanimously to recommend approval of the special use permits and 4 to 1 to recommend approval of the requested zoning variations.
According to village documents, the new train station will be modernized to reduce air emissions and will have ADA-accessible restrooms, ramps, sidewalks and surfaces. There will also be designated areas for ADA-accessible dropoff and pickup.
The pedestrian and bicycle underpass aims to relieve traffic congestion and improve accessibility and safety, connecting to Prairie Path.
