2017 Glenview Holiday Parade, Small Business Saturday

GLENVIEW, IL — If you have the opportunity and you enjoy the small businesses that make up your community, it's a smart idea to make sure to shop local as much as possible for your holiday shopping. As big-box retailers move to dominate Black Friday and online sellers siphon up billions of dollars in business on Cyber Monday, don't forget about your local mom and pop stores, your neighborhood startups and your multi-generational family businesses.

That's why Small Business Saturday has caught on so quickly over the past seven years. The post-Black Friday, pre-Cyber Monday event has been growing every year since 2010. In 2016, 112 million shoppers came out and generated an estimated $15.4 billion for small business owners, according to self-reported data in a survey sponsored by the National Federation of Independent Businesses and American Express – the "founding sponsor" and registered trademark holder of the event. Also Saturday, starting at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 4 p.m., come celebrate the start of the holiday season with Glenview's annual Holiday in the Park & Parade. Follow the parade down Glenview Road starting at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church heading west to Jackman Park, where refreshments and festivities will be on offer. Enjoy visits with Santa, a tree lighting, hay rides, train rides, carolers, cookies, popcorn and hot chocolate.

The parade will close Glenview Road from Harlem Avenue to Washington Street will be closed from about 3 to 4:30 p.m. Washington Street will stay closed between Glenview Road and Lehigh Avenue for the Jackman Park festivities.

2017 Glenview "Win With The Bear"

Also unique to Glenview, the annual Win with The Bear campaign gives shoppers an opportunity to win big while shopping local. More than 65 prizes are on offer from stores all around town ahead of a final drawing for a grand prize – a Star Wars drone – on Dec. 18.

“Win with The Bear helps us all discover our rich local assets and have fun doing it," said Executive Director of the Glenview Chamber of Commerce Betsy Baer. She said the promotion also inspires Glenview residents to do their holiday shopping locally to keep their dollars in their community. "When you shop local, 1.75 percent of your purchase price goes to support Glenview’s public services. That’s why we say, ‘When you shop local, your whole hometown wins,'" Baer said.

Take a look at some local stores that are participating in Win with The Bear promotions in Glenview below, and pick up an entry form while shopping at participating stores before dropping it off at Glenview Bank & Trust to enter to win the grand prize. The more businesses you visit, the more chances to win you'll have. Both Level 1 drawings at the shops and Level 2 drawing at the banks are slated for Dec. 18, according to the Chamber.
