$20K Geek Squad Scam, DUI Arrest: Glenview Police Blotter

GLENVIEW, IL — A resident who lost $20,000 in an alleged Geek Squad scam and a customer accused of threatening employees with a cane are among the incidents in the latest Glenview Police Department reports.

Recent arrests also included charges of DUI, domestic battery and speeding.

The following information comes from Glenview Police Department reports. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

IDENTITY THEFT

A resident of the 4100 block of Cove Lane reported Aug. 25 entering personal information into an email before later learning it was a scam. Police said the resident was notified that a SoFi credit card account had been opened in their name without authorization.

THEFT

A resident of the 500 block of Warren Road reported Aug. 25 that an unknown offender took a package that had been delivered to the home two days earlier.

$20,000 SCAM

A resident of the 1800 block of Wildberry Drive reported Aug. 25 receiving an email purportedly from Geek Squad and calling the number provided.

Police said the resident was told a refund was being issued and was asked for bank account information. The scammers then allegedly convinced the resident to withdraw $20,000 after claiming the wrong refund amount had been deposited.

The resident brought the cash to a parking lot and gave it to a man described as white, between 30 and 40 years old, with blond hair, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 160 pounds, who was driving a white convertible. The total loss was $20,000, according to police.

RETAIL THEFT

Officers responded Aug. 26 to a business in the 0 block of Waukegan Road after two people allegedly concealed two bottles of liquor in a backpack and left without paying.

IDENTITY THEFT

A resident of the 1800 block of Waterbury Circle reported Aug. 26 that someone in California had used the resident's Social Security number without authorization.

TRESPASS WARNING

Employees at a business in the 900 block of Harlem Avenue reported Aug. 27 finding someone sleeping in a bathroom and bathing in a sink.

Officers later located the person at the train station and issued a trespass warning not to return to the business.

DEA SCAM ATTEMPT

An employee at a business in the 1500 block of Greenwood Road reported Aug. 27 receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a Drug Enforcement Administration officer.

The caller allegedly said a package containing drugs and other contraband had been intercepted in the employee's name and instructed the employee to withdraw money to pay fees connected to the supposed crime. The employee recognized it as a scam and refused.

RETAIL THEFT

Employees at a business in the 2200 block of Willow Road reported Aug. 27 that two people left beyond the last point of purchase without paying for an item.

One person was issued a village ordinance citation for theft, and both were given trespass warnings not to return.

ASSAULT

Employees at a business in the 1600 block of Milwaukee Avenue reported Aug. 27 that a customer threatened to hit employees with a cane because an order was taking too long.

The person left before police arrived.

WARRANT ARREST

Candice Armstead, 37, was arrested Aug. 26 following a traffic stop in the 3700 block of West Lake Avenue.

Police said Armstead was charged with two counts related to warrants, failure to properly wear a seat belt, operating an uninsured vehicle and operating a vehicle with registration suspended lacking insurance.

She remained in custody pending transport to the Skokie Courthouse on the warrants and was given a Sept. 15 court date on the traffic charges.

DUI

Japhin Rocuant Litberg, 25, of Chicago, was arrested at around 1:37 a.m. Aug. 29 following a traffic stop in the 200 block of Waukegan Road.

Police charged Rocuant Litberg with DUI involving alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or more and improper lane usage.

Rocuant Litberg was cited and released under Cook County's nondiscretionary pretrial release conditions and given a Sept. 8 court date.

SPEEDING

Armaan Siddiqui, 22, of Glenview, was arrested at around 1:52 p.m. Aug. 29 following a traffic stop in the 1900 block of East Lake Avenue.

Police said Siddiqui was charged with speeding 26 to 34 mph over the limit. He was cited and released under Cook County's nondiscretionary pretrial release conditions and given an Oct. 6 court date.

DOMESTIC BATTERY

Garrett Larson, 26, of Glenview, was arrested at around 9:34 p.m. Aug. 29 following an investigation and charged with domestic battery.

Police said Larson was processed and taken to the Cook County Correctional Facility to await a conditions hearing Aug. 30.

BATTERY

Two people reported Aug. 29 having a traffic altercation with another driver while traveling in the 700 block of Harlem Avenue.

Police said one person pulled over to allow the vehicle to pass, but the other driver stopped and got out while yelling. Another person stopped to help and was shoved by the car door, causing an injury.

The driver was issued a village ordinance citation.

CANNABIS POSSESSION

An Arlington Heights resident was issued a village ordinance citation Aug. 30 for possession of cannabis following a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Dearlove Road.

IDENTITY THEFT

A resident reported Aug. 30 that an unauthorized $2,500 transfer had been made from a checking account Aug. 21.

The report was made at the Glenview Police Department.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

Officers responded Aug. 30 to the 2700 block of Aviator Lane for a report of damaged plants and planters.

Police said numerous plants had been pulled from planters and thrown onto the floor, while several planters had been moved from their original locations.

THEFT

A resident reported Aug. 31 that property had been stolen by an unknown offender in the 800 block of Shermer Road.

Police said the incident occurred July 24.
