During the course of the investigation, police learned Jose Guzman-Ezquivel and Miranda were involved in a fight in July. Following the fight, the 15-year-old juvenile offender reportedly obtained a picture of Jose Guzman-Ezquivel in order to identify him and seek revenge for the fight, according to police.
On Aug. 19, police said Miranda and the juvenile approached the victims outside an apartment complex and shot Jose Guzman-Ezquivel several times at close range. While attempting to flee, Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel and the third victim were shot from behind. Officers recovered multiple shell casing from different caliber firearms at the scene, as well as a cellphone belonging to the juvenile, according to police.
Using recovered cellphone data, surveillance footage and other digital evidence to identify the shooters and the two additional people involved, prosecutors say police discovered Martinez acted as a lookout during the attack, while Patino-Jaime helped dispose of the vehicle used to travel to and from the shooting.
Miranda and Martinez are both due back in court Jan. 10, 2024.
