GLENVIEW, IL — Having a son living with a disability helped local author Natalie Haney Tilghman with a creative nonfiction essay she recently had published. The Glenview resident's work, "Portrait with a Seagull," is featured in the most current issue of Kaleidoscope: Exploring the Experience of Disability through Literature and the Fine Arts, published by United Disability Services.
"My son has taught me how to see the world in a new, richer way, and I am passionate about inclusion and neurodiversity," said Tilghman, who is a novelist, editor, educator and mother to three children.
Tilghman's work was selected from more than 400 submissions to the award-winning publication.
According to UDS, "Portrait With A Seagull" tells the story of a family beach vacation that takes an unexpected turn when the author's son, who has a disability, forms an unusual bond with a seagull. As the mother navigates this unforeseen attachment, she learns to let go of her expectations and embrace spontaneity, ultimately relying on their feathered friend to salvage the family photo shoot.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of Kaleidoscope "helping emerging writers and artists find their voices and change perceptions of disability." Learn more here.
