A large section of downtown Glenview remained without power Friday night after an electrical pole bent sharply earlier in the day, sending wires drooping just a few feet above the sidewalk—a failure the village admits it saw coming, just not this soon.
The chain of events unfolded predictably but swiftly. The bent pole placed extreme tension on power lines, causing them to sag to dangerous lows. That sagging likely triggered a cascade failure: wires either made contact with each other, brushed against a tree branch, or touched the ground, tripping breakers and blowing fuses upstream. The result—a blackout that silenced much of Glenview’s north-side business district on one of the busiest nights of the week.
“We knew this pole needed work. It was on our list of future projects,” a village spokesperson said late Friday. That planned project will eventually bury the wires underground, removing the aging poles entirely. “But we didn’t expect it to bend or fall this soon.”
The timing couldn’t be worse. Friday night traffic, combined with high call volumes from other outages across the area, has delayed crew response. For now, all businesses and restaurants on the north side of Glenview Road remain closed, their windows dark and doors locked.
Among them is GUSTO, a local favorite. Its owners and managers sat out front in folding chairs, phones in hand, watching the empty street and waiting for lights to flicker back on. “We had a full reservation book,” one manager said, shaking her head. “Now we’re just sitting here hoping crews get here before everyone gives up and goes home.”
No estimated restoration time has been given. The village advises avoiding the area and treating all low-hanging wires as live.
