In my 20+ years selling homes in Glenview, IL I've watched this town change in a lot of ways, but Hackney's on Lake never did. It was a fixture, drawing Glenview in with its staples, the Hackneyburger and my personal favorite, the fried onion loaf.
A 700-seat restaurant made sense decades ago. It doesn't anymore, and I think most of us who have watched Glenview grow and change over the years feel the same way about a lot of things. Sometimes the right move is a smaller, more personal footprint instead of a bigger one.
I got to see the newly refreshed Harms Road location, and I have to say, I'm glad they are keeping this location. The updated bar and booths still have that same roadhouse charm, just in a space that feels more private and more quaint than the old Lake Avenue dining room ever did. Plus, Macushla Brewing Company is still right there keeping the neighborhood lively.
Glenview has always been about the people, not just the place. Hackney's on Lake may be closing, but that spirit didn't leave with it, it just moved a mile and a half down the road.
Thank you to the Masterson family and the entire Hackney's staff for decades of great food and even better memories. I'll see you all down the road on Harms, onion loaf in hand.
