Communicate With Your Adult Children

Dr. Clatch writes about how communication goes a long way between parents and adult children sharing a home.

While ground rules for the house provide a basic foundation for communication, parents should attempt to reach out to their adult children and find out what is going on in their lives. Communication is essential for clarifying misunderstandings and for preventing conflict. Communication is also important to make children feel accepted and appreciated. Parents and adult children should try to set time aside to regularly convene, whether it be over a meal or a scheduled activity. This is not only important for the dynamic of the family, but can facilitate more comfortable and enthusiastic conversation.
