Consider Therapy for AS Youth Struggling with Hygiene

Dr. Clatch writes about how parents should consider therapy for their children with AS if they continue to struggle with hygiene.

There are many ways in which parents can with their children’s sensory issues to promote a habit of hygiene: making hygiene a part of the daily routine, modeling hygienic practices, and making accommodations for sensory issues. However, if your child or adolescent continues to struggle with their personal hygiene despite these efforts, consider seeking professional help from a therapist who specializes in working with youth on the Autism Spectrum. These therapists will be able to assess your child’s needs in order to provide instruction and education that is commensurate with your child’s ability to understand hygiene issues. ASD specialists can also work with you, the parent, to translate skills learned in the therapeutic setting to the home. As your child matures into adolescence and puberty, such guidance may prove essential in not only the development of their self-care skills but also their social and psychological maturation.
