To Curb Impulsivity, Talk With Your Child
Dr. Clatch writes about how parents can support their children in learning positive habits of self-control.

When your child engages in impulsive acts, talk with him or her about the consequences of these actions. Although the damage that has occurred as a result of impulsivity may be difficult to repair, parents can use these events as learning opportunities for their child. Simply ignoring the event or punishing the child does not promote learning. Children - particularly those with ADHD - may continue to struggle with impulsivity issues. However, positive learning that occurs when problems arise may provide the needed supports to help reinforce positive behavior in the future. Talking with your child in a calm and reasonable tone also communicates the fact that you care and are willing to help.
