A Chicago man is accused of leaving his 3-year-old son inside a car parked in a Morton Grove lot while he went into a bar to gamble.

Edwin Ruiz, 38 told police he stopped at the All in Bar on the 5700 block of Dempster Street to pick up food for his son and “kill two birds with one stone” by gambling as well, according to the Morton Grove Champion.

Police found the boy in the intersection after responding to a call where two people had seen the boy standing alone outside a building there.

A witness told police he tried to look up contact information for the boy’s parents on an iPad he was carrying, but was unable to locate a phone number. The boy told police his dad left him in the car and he was crossing the street to try and find him.

Ruiz was found near a video poker station in the bar. He told police he had been in there for about 15 minutes. A babysitter picked the boy up from a McDonald’s, where he was taken by police.
