Depression and Divorce
Dr. Clatch writes about the effects of divorce on children, and the importance of parental attention during this difficult time.

Children and adolescents who experience divorce often go through a period of transition in which behavior becomes unpredictable and, at times, erratic. Some children may act out or regress in their behavior (e.g., sleeping with a favorite teddy bear after years of abandoning the habit) while others may become sullen and depressed.
While depression is a normal part of the grieving process and many children and teens experience depression as a normal part of their development, parents should be acutely aware of their children’s emotional state following a divorce. A period of sadness over divorce may evolve into something more profound requiring outside intervention to solve the problem.
