Distracting Impulsive Children
Dr. Clatch writes about how to quickly and temporarily diffuse a child's impulsive behavior by providing distractions.

When your child acts impulsively, you can diffuse the situation by distracting them or moving them toward another activity. For instance, if your child wants a toy that another child is playing with, your child to anther toy or activity. Engage him or her in the activity until the other toy becomes available. You may need to remove your child from the room away from the desired object. Even though this can be a challenging task, it may redirect your child’s attention and prevent him or her from engaging in socially destructive behavior—e.g., ripping to desired toy out of the hands of another child.
