Downtown Glenview’s Success Story Has a Towing Tab: $1,200 a Night

The tri-corner of culinary and cultural success in downtown Glenview—featuring CorePower Yoga, Gusto Italiano, and the new Zenzi Den—has created an unexpected boom for one local business: Glenview North-Shore Towing.

With parking at a premium on Monday nights and the situation expected to worsen as Foxrtail at Glen View House prepares to open its doors, tow truck drivers are pulling in record profits.

One driver for the company reported hauling away five cars per shift, earning the company $1,200 in a single night.“We have never had this much business from downtown Glenview,” a dispatch representative for Glenview North-Shore Towing confirmed, noting the fee is $240 per car as long as the vehicle is retrieved within 24 hours.

The popularity of CorePower Yoga—which ironically rents space from the Midtown Square building owners—combined with the dinner rush at Gusto and the buzz surrounding Zenzi Den has created a gridlock for spaces.The situation is complicated by geography: the railroad tracks block access to residential parking west of RR Street, and RR Street itself offers limited public parking. This forces drivers to compete for the scarce spots in lots like Midtown Square and the Glenview Grinds lot.

Who is at risk?

While valet service is available at Gusto, some diners attempt to park in the Glenview Grinds lot. The coffee shop closes early, leading to confusion about whether those spots are fair game or subject to towing. On Monday night, the tow truck claimed two victims: one customer of CorePower Yoga and one diner from Gusto.

A Glimpse of the Future

The situation is only expected to intensify. Foxrtail, a new restaurant set to open at the intersection in the next one to two months, plans to seat over 200 patrons a night. With the current infrastructure already buckling under demand, community leaders may soon be forced to consider drastic measures, such as remote parking and shuttle buses, to keep downtown Glenview accessible.

On top of this: The village of Glenview actually pays for valet parking in front of Jackman restaurant because they were the first one to move into downtown Glenview.

All of the other restaurants are two blocks further west and won’t really utilize that service even though Glenview introduced it as a service that is meant for all of downtown, Glenview.

Not many people would walk two or three blocks to use a valet parking and then have to walk two or three blocks back to a restaurant that they are choosing on the other side of town.
