Educating Children on Tolerance

Dr. Clatch writes about the importance of teaching children about diversity and tolerance.

Educating children on the importance of tolerance and diversity provides a broad foundation upon which children can understand differences and learn about cooperation. Providing children with supports in these areas can change the way that they look at the world and how they look at the issue of bullying. Collaboration between the home, school, and community will reinforce the message that tolerance and diversity and desirable and welcome.

Unfortunately, ameliorating bullying in all of its forms is a challenging task. One important step in this journey is for everyone to recognize that bullying is not a social rite of passage, but an act of purposeful harm. Changing how we look at bullying will positively influence how we approach this issue and the actions we take to address it.
