Extended Benefits of Unstructured Free Play

Dr. Clatch writes about how caregivers benefit from scheduling unstructured free play for their children.

While unstructured free play obviously benefits children, it also has benefits for adult caregivers. In particular, unstructured free play can provide caregivers with a break in providing continual care to the small child. Unfortunately, many parents feel as if allowing their children to engage in unstructured free play is a waste of time. A focus on preparing the child for kindergarten has taken precedence over parenting activities in the toddler and preschool years. Even though caregivers may believe that structured activities are needed to ensure that their child is ready for school, unstructured free play can be a vital component in preparing any child for the rigors of a structured classroom.
