FREE SERVICES FROM THE ALZHEIMER'S FOUNDATION OF AMERICA AND SENIOR HELPERS, THE CARES AFFILIATE OFFICE IN THE CHICAGO AREA
Cases of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Forms of Dementia Growing Dramatically
Senior Helpers, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) CARES affiliate office for the entire Chicago area want to inform the community about all the free resources available to people concerned about dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease -and other challenges facing seniors. Currently, half of all Americans know someone who has Alzheimer’s Disease. According to a new government report published in the Neurology Journal, the number of people with Alzheimer’s in the country could triple during the next three decades due to the ever-expanding group of aging Baby Boomers who are entering their at-risk years.
"Alzheimer’s Disease is the sixth most common cause of death in the U.S. and the only one of the six still growing at an accelerated rate," says Abbie Tucker, senior advocate and client services director, certified senior advisor (CSA) and qualified dementia care provider (QDCP), at the Senior Helpers Northbrook office. "Because of this alarming situation, my office wants the community to know what free services are available to them."

One of the services the office provides is memory screenings. If you are concerned that you or your loved one may have a memory problem, screening can help you decide whether you should see your doctor about this, or if it simply normal aging.
"We also offer a free award-winning DVD featuring nationally recognized dementia care expert Teepa Snow, OT. This presentation provides those who need help with how best to communicate with, plan productive activities for, and create the best physical environment for their loved one, " says Bob Tucker, also a qualified dementia care provider (QDCP) and co-owner of Senior Helpers.

The DVD also discusses the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias, as well as the early warning signs and care options. At the Senior Helpers office, members of the community who want to learn more about these diseases will also find books, magazines and articles available at no charge.
Copies of the AFA’s quarterly publication, Care Advantage, for people looking for the very latest information available about Alzheimer’s and related illnesses are also available.
