Glenbrook South PE Teacher Tim Monahan Honored

The boys volleyball coach and 23-year GBS veteran was announced as the winner of a IAHPERD High School Teacher of the Year Award.

GLENVIEW, IL — A physical education teacher at Glenbrook South High School was honored with a High School Teacher of the Year award from the Northeastern District of the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Timothy Monahan has been teaching at Glenbrook South since 1996 and is currently the head coach of the boys' volleyball team, according to Glenbrook High School District 225. The award recognized Monahan as an outstanding educator dedicated to encouraging young people to take part in a healthy lifestyle and a lifetime of exercise.

Steve Stanicek, supervisor of physical education, driver ed and health at Glenbrook South, credited Monahan will developing a team-building program including camping and fire-making skills, cooking, wall climbing and a high ropes course.

“Tim has built an impressive Adventure Education program and has added to our curriculum every year,” Stanicek said. “Tim’s determination, commitment and leadership are some of the main reasons for the success of the GBS program.”

Monahan will be honored at an awards banquet in October, according to the district. According to the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, award winners at the district level will move on to the state level, the SHAPE America district level and the national level at the SHAPE America national convention.
