Brothers Were Shielding 3-Year-Old Nephew When Shot Dead: Sister

A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover medical, funeral and burial costs for the teens who died over the weekend.

UNINCORPORATED GLENVIEW, IL — Two teenage brothers, who died during a Saturday evening shooting outside their home, were shielding a 3-year-old nephew from gunshots, according to a family member. Anette Guzman, their sister, has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for medical, funeral and burial expenses.

Carlos Guzman, 19, was a 2022 graduate of Glenbrook South High School, where his brother, Jose, 16, was a current student. The two teens sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the incident in the 10400 block of Michael Todd Terrace, west of Milwaukee Avenue, according to police. Jose Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene, while Carlos Guzman died later after being taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

According to the GoFundMe, which had raised $29,000 of a $50,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon, the brothers were the sons of Carlos and Azucena Guzman and younger brothers to Anette and Andrea Guzman.

The younger Carlos Guzman worked at UPS at the time of his death and "loved playing soccer," according to his sister.

"He always had a sense of humor and was understanding and caring to his family and friends," Anette Guzman said in the GoFundMe post.

Jose Guzman was about to start his junior year at GBS next week and dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player.

"He also loved to draw and was a very talented artist," Anette Guzman said. "He was always protective, caring, and loving towards his family and friends, and died shielding his 3-year-old nephew from gunshots."

Anette said her family is grieving and the pain of losing both of their sons for her parents is "insurmountable."
