GLENVIEW, IL – As temperatures soar outside, the Glenview Public Library is turning into the coolest spot in town—and its summer reading programs are already in full swing for all ages. For adults, the rewards are warming up even as the mercury rises.

Participants who dive into five books—or five photography books—score a GPL plaid picnic blanket plus one raffle ticket for a shot at one of four Glenview baskets, each packed with local business goodies.

Read or view 20 books? That earns up to four raffle tickets total. Track your progress online at glenviewpl.beanstack.org, in person, or via the Beanstack app. A volunteer said Beanstack is not very user-freindly, so feel free to stop by reader services.

And if blankets aren’t your style, leftover 2024 GPL pint glasses are available as a swap.Kids and teens are urged to read daily—with a key reminder from librarians: "All kinds of reading count, including print, audio, and eBooks." Rewards kick in at 15 and 30 days, with a free book and a grand-prize raffle ticket at 40 days. Read every single day?

Extra raffle tickets pile up for the big drawings. The program is already earning rave reviews from local participants. "The reading program helped me discover a new author and I'm going to pursue more of her style of writing," said Dawn Brekke of Glenview, who picked out a blanket.Diane Gosser, a 34-year resident of Glenview, picked out her fourth glass. "I read one or two books a month and my favorite subject is time travel."

Most of the books Gosser reads come from the Glenview library, she added.

According to a volunteer in reader services, many readers are electing the library pint glass from 2024 so they can get a complete four- or six-set collection.“The reading program helped me discover a new author and I’m going to pursue more of her style of writing,” said Dawn Brekke of Glenview, who picked out a blanket.

New this year: the School Challenge—the local school with the most summer reading completions will take home a traveling trophy, adding a competitive edge to the summer slide battle.

Note: The library will be closed July 3–4, so plan your cool-down visits accordingly.
