Glenview Man Pleads Guilty in North Korea Weapons Case

Gary Tsai will spend no more than five years in prison after admitting to lesser charge.

A Glenview man will serve no more than five years in prison after agreeing to a plea deal following accusations he and his Taiwanese father attempted to evade a United States ban on selling weapon-making equipment to North Korea.

Gary Tsai, 27, was arrested on May 1 and accused of exporting machinery with his father, Alex Tsai, that could be used to make weapons of mass destruction. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that on Tuesday he agreed to a plea deal under which he would admit to lying on shipping documents about who would receive an industrial grinder he was selling.

A sentencing hearing is planned for March, but as part of the plea, the sentence will be capped at five years.
