Many other countries have tried to conquer this mountainous and tribal region, but none have ever succeeded. The same factors that make it hard to conquer also make it hard to govern, as the modern world has seen during the past 50 years. The future of Afghanistan is uncertain, but that future will have major impact on the prospects for peace in the region.
