The Importance of Self-Reflection
Dr. Clatch writes about the importance of knowing yourself when setting out to forge new friendships.

Knowing what kind of friends you would like to have is a great place to start when setting out to meet new people; however, it is also very important to know what kind of a friend you are. One can usually tell the character of a person by how they treat their friends, so some self-reflection is necessary in order to better understand what you bring to the table in a relationship. This information can be used to build strengths and to work on deficits; say, for instance, that you like to care for your friends when they are feeling down - that would be a strength. On the other hand, you might have a tendency to interrupt others while they are talking - that would be a deficit.
Being aware of these characteristics enables you to more objectively assess your friendship capabilities. Although the process can be difficult and may require you to face some difficult aspects of your behavior or personality, it can provide a basis for building friendships. In the end, a dash of self-reflection and a pinch of strengthening weaknesses can go a long way when making friends.
