Incorporating Unstructured Free Play into Your Child's Routine

Dr. Clatch writes about how parents can make more time for unstructured free play.

Given all of the things that children need to learn before kindergarten, caregivers may be unsure of how to incorporate free play in their child’s routine. In order to create opportunities for children to engage in unstructured free play, caregivers need to change their views on this issue. Recognize the benefits that can be achieved through the use of unstructured free play, creating the right mindset to allow children to engage in these activities. In addition, consider reducing your child’s amount of structured time. If your preschool-age child is enrolled in extracurricular activities every day of the week, pick a couple that your child enjoys the most and drop the rest. Reducing the amount of structured time in the child’s day will provide opportunities for unstructured free play.
