Making Hygiene Routine

Dr. Clatch writes about how parents can help establish better hygienic habits in children and teens with Asperger's.

With the realization that hygiene is such a difficult and challenging issue for children and adolescents, it is important for caregivers to consider what they can do to promote personal hygiene without overwhelming their child or adolescent with sensory issues or negative criticism. Although the specific hygiene needs of each child will be different, there are some steps that parents and caregivers can take to improve outcomes in these areas. The first is making personal hygiene a part of every household member’s daily routine.

Routine and structure are important components for reducing stress in children and adolescents with AS. By making personal hygiene activities such as brushing teeth and showering a part of daily life, individuals with AS will come to view these activities as an integral part of their routine. This can reduce the stress of engaging in activities that may cause sensory challenges.
