Man Indicted for Stealing Elderly Deerfield Man's Identity

Ira Biegel is accused of opening fraudulent credit card accounts in the name of an elderly Deerfield man.

A Glenview man has been charged with stealing the identity of an elderly Deerfield man and opened three fraudulent credit cards in his name.

The Deerfield Review reports Ira Biegel, 65, was indicted by a grand jury Thursday with four counts of aggravated identity theft of an elderly person and is being held at the Lake County Jail on $100,000 bond.

A four-month investigation began when the victim received notification from a credit reporting agency that a bogus card was being used in his name for a $400 purchase. The ability to determine where the account applications were being made led the investigation to Biegel, who was arrested at his Glenview home on January 22 by the Deerfield Police Department with the help of the Glenview Police Department and Homeland Security agents.
