From the first moment that the entire cast launches into the familiar Mega-Hit 9to5 by country music legend Dolly Parton, the anticipation coursing through the audience at The Marriott Theater in Lincolnshire is evident. From that point forward, Lead Actress Violet (played convincingly by the versatile Kelli Cramer) takes the audience on a two hour and fifteen minute romp through the trials and travails of working under the "thumb" of an insufferably chauvinistic Boss, (Mr. Hart) played by the deliciously devilish James Moye.
Joined by a new hire and initially meek Judy Bernly, played by well-known Broadway character actress and accomplished singer Susan Montz, Violet soon takes Judy under her wing, ultimately empowering her to "discover my backbone."
The third piece to the trio is Doralee Rhodes, played to perfection by Alexandra Palkovic, who is uncannily cast as the Dolly Parton character as the likable, sexy blonde who's harassed at every turn by Moye's Mr. Hart. Wig not withstanding, if you squinted momentarily at Palkovic, you'd swear you were seeing a young Dolly in her prime 25 year's ago. Dolly herself would be impressed.
The remainder of the cast and ensemble are equally impressive-Marya Grandy in the role of Roz Keith, Harts pandering, hero-worshiping secretary (yes, I reverted back to the old-school term for irony:), believes that Mr. Hart can do no wrong and has her infatuation rebuffed at every turn by the piggish Hart.
The musical flows seamlessly, with cast and ensemble transforming the set without a hitch. Director David Bell shows why he's considered one of the best at his craft and audiences end up being the big winners here. 5 Stars for 9to5 and kudos to The Marriott Theater for a great summer choice in a musical as well as superb seating (not a poor seat in the house) and a first class operation across the board.
The staff at the theater are friendly, polite and accommodating. A perfect summer/fall programming concept. For more information go to: www.marriotttheater.com or call: 847-634-0200 to book your tickets.
