More Young Adults are Remaining at Home

Dr. Clatch writes about how, despite their desire to leave the nest, many young adults simply aren't able to support themselves financially.

Leaving the family home is an age-old rite of passage, when a child becomes old enough to go out into the world and start making decisions by themselves. It is a time of immense freedom, self-expression, and growth that most young adults look forward to. There is also the thrill of living on their own, away from the supervision of their parents and among peers, that remains one of the hallmarks of young independence. However, even though modern young adults may desire to leave home, many simply cannot afford to manage the costs of an apartment or home even while working multiple jobs. Parents must accept the fact that many adult children may remain at home even into their late 20s and early 30s, and work with their children to re-define household and family rules.
