North Shore Obituary: Joan S. (Kearney) Kenny

The following obituary is courtesy of Donnellan Family Funeral Services.

Joan was born in New York and moved to Chicago in 1933. She graduated from St. Scholastica’s High School, Mundelein College, and pursued her masters degree in special education from Northern Illinois University. She married her first husband, Marshall Kearney, in April of 1948. After he passed away in 1963, Joan raised her four children by herself. She worked as a teacher for Catholic Charities of Chicago for over 25 years, teaching the blind and partially sighted. She never lost her love of teaching, constantly turning everyday activities with those around her into teaching moments. In 1973, Joan married her second husband, Edmund J. Kenny. She was happily married to him until his death in 2001. She prided herself on her love of her family, enjoyed golfing, was a master bridge player, enjoyed reading and socializing with her many friends at The Vi in Glenview.

She was the beloved wife of the late Edmund Kenny and Marshall Kearney, Jr. Loving mother of Marty (Denise) Kearney, of Northfield, Tom (Mary) Kearney of Glenview, Kathy (Jack) Dollard of San Diego, CA, and the late Terry Kearney. Stepmother of Joyce Cassetta, Bill (Mary) Kenny, Janet Reid, and Bob (Louise) Kenny. Proud grandmother of 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and counting. Loving sister of Marilyn (the late James) Hines and the late William (Rita) Shea. Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Visitation Friday, May 22, 2015 9:30 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 1962 Old Willow Rd., Northfield, IL 60093. Interment All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bright Futures, c/o The Vi, 2500 Indigo Lane, Glenview, IL 60025 or the Oak Park/River Forest Football program, 201 Scoville, Oak Park, IL 60302.
