The North Suburban YMCA has released its 2016 Summer Camp Guide, filled with exciting new day camps for children in preschool through junior high. Families can plan ahead for an outstanding summer experience and meet the Y’s leadership staff at a Camp Open House from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on January 31.
Online registration is now open for day camps at the YMCA, which offers a wide variety of engaging at the Y’s expansive campus in Northbrook. The 2016 Camp Guide, available at www.nsymca.org, includes a host of traditional camps as well as specialty programs in dance, sports, gymnastics and art. In addition, the Y offers brand new camp programs for 2016 in computer technology, cooking, magic and balloon animals, art, and Lego creations.
North Suburban YMCA camp programs combine fun and discovery for children with flexibility and peace of mind for parents. Campers have access to the Y’s extensive facility, including an indoor pool, large gyms, art and dance studio, and outdoor play areas. Weekly field trips take campers to water parks, amusement parks, zoos, and other fun venues.
All camp activities are run by highly trained counselors under the leadership of the Y’s experienced professional staff. New Camp Director Carol Sassorossi, a veteran NSYMCA coach and sports director, has been with the Y for over 20 years. She is assisted by Shannon Cartier, an early childhood educator with over ten years at the Y who will supervise the early childhood and special camps; Ashley Almdale, who brings seven years of camp experience to her supervision of the sports camps; and Kevin Tyner, another seven-year camp veteran who will supervise the traditional camps. All four are certified teachers in addition to their experience with the YMCA camp programs. NSYMCA Visual Arts Director Cathie Winnie and Performing Arts Director Shannon Mundorf also work closely with the camps in their areas of expertise.
Parents appreciate the unique scheduling features that make the YMCA’s camp truly customizable and affordable. The Y offers half day and full day camps, before- and after-camp childcare, and even transportation from Northbrook summer schools to afternoon camps. Campers can sign up for sessions by the week, accommodating family vacations and enabling kids to sample different Y programs. (Campers must be signed up for a minimum of three days per week, with prorated fees.) Payment plans are available, and families in financial need may apply for scholarships through the Y’s Strong Kids Fund.
The Y will host a Summer Camp Open House on January 31 to welcome new and returning families. Children will enjoy games and activities while parents meet camp leaders and staff. The Camp Open House runs from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Y, located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook. Families who register during the reunion will be entered in a drawing to win a free week of camp and a free month of NSYMCA membership.
“Camps are special at the YMCA because they’re designed with families in mind,” notes Carol Sassorossi. “Parents know that their children will be in a fun, safe, supportive environment, and our scheduling options make it easy to accommodate work and travel schedules. Plus, our campers have loads of opportunities to learn, play, and make new friends. We can’t wait for summer to start!”
