Raising Children with AS: Marriage and Beyond

Dr. Clatch concludes his series on marriage and Asperger's by quelling parents' worries when it comes to their children's futures.

Marriage, like any other long-term commitment, must be regularly discussed, re-organized, and affirmed; this includes marriages between individuals with AS and neurotypical partners. An earlier Daily Blog post mentioned the worry that many parents face when their children are diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome: that marriage might be a lofty goal for their child. However, the challenges of marriage must be recognized and addressed just like any other problems that arise for a couple, and it is important for parents of children with AS to trust that their children will be able to handle those challenges when the time is right. After all, these parents work hard to provide their children with support in developing necessary social, educational, and life skills. By recognizing that love, intimacy, and lasting marriages are not exclusive to neurotypical people, parents of children with AS can embrace the potential for their children to live fulfilling lives as married adults.
