Supporting Those with Asperger's

Dr. Clatch writes about how communities can help support individuals with Asperger's in building self-esteem and necessary social skills.

Although there is no simple fix for improving social competency for individuals with Asperger’s, there is hope. The solution has two facets which each require equal attention. First, efforts are needed to educate the public about the challenges facing individuals with Asperger’s. This must be done to promote a more inclusive environment in which the needs of this group can be better understood. Second, therapeutic support for the individual with Asperger’s can be critical to building many of the social competencies needed to promote better social interactions and relationship building. This support involves breaking down complex emotions and social cues so that they can be taught to individuals with Asperger’s, improving their ability to connect with others. The process is challenging and intensive, but it can be an essential tool for improving social interactions in this group.
