Temple Jeremiah completes successful 2014 Community-Supported Agriculture program with Sandhill Family Farms

Temple Jeremiah, a Reform synagogue in Northfield, completes farm share program

Temple Jeremiah is nearing completion of its two-year certification process with Green Faith, which is part of the nation’s first interfaith environmental certification process for houses of worship. As just one part of its continuing effort to live out its values of becoming a green congregation, Temple Jeremiah has just completed another highly successful farm share season with its partners at Sandhill Family Farms. Sandhill Family Farms is a cooperation between two family-owned farms, one in Grayslake, Ill. and the other in Brodhead, Wisc.

This past year, participants were able to purchase the freshest organic vegetables, fruits, dairy, and eggs. And Temple Jeremiah is excited to announce that it will partner with Sandhill Farms again next year. Spring shares will begin in early May 2015; summer shares will begin in mid-June 2015; and fall shares will begin in mid-October 2015. The Northfield/Winnetka pick-up location is at Temple Jeremiah. For more information, and to sign up, go to www.sandhillfamilyfarms. Participation is open to anyone in the surrounding communities who wishes to participate. You do not need to be a member of Temple Jeremiah to be part of this wonderful program.

According to Rabbi Emily Segal, who has led Temple Jeremiah’s GreenFaith initiative, “Our participation in the farm share program not only allows our community to eat healthier, delicious, nutrient-filled fruits and vegetables ripened on the plant, and fresh dairy and eggs from humanely-cared for animals, but also allows us to live out our Jewish values of caring for the world and preventing the needless suffering of animals. It is a blessing and privilege for us to share this opportunity with our entire community within and beyond Temple Jeremiah.”

The GreenFaith program is designed to help churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples earn recognition as environmental leaders by carrying out over two dozen environmental activities over two years.

Temple Jeremiah is a Reform Jewish congregational family whose mission is to foster and invigorate a love for worship, study of Torah, and acts of Tikkun Olam in a caring community that embraces diversity in its membership. It is dedicated to lifelong Jewish education, tzedakah, and social justice.
