Township Road District Plans Future Repairs with Cost-Friendly Recycling Process
Innovative strategy reduces cost, time, and environmental impact of road reconstruction projects.

As the traditional season for road repairs gets underway, the Northfield Township Road District plans to expand its use of recycled road materials in major projects around Northbrook and Glenview Unincorporated areas. This innovative replacement process, which was successfully implemented in the Glenbrook Countryside neighborhood in 2014, delivers smooth, durable roads with a drastically lower environmental impact than traditional haul-away methods. It also saves the Township hundreds of thousands of dollars per project in transportation and disposal costs.
The Road District will continue to address neighborhood road repairs that will be determined after a thorough evaluation process. This process involves boring holes on all the District’s streets to evaluate existing surface and base structure including the amount of asphalt, the depth of the stone base, and the type of soil beneath the stone base.
The recycle-in-place process involves the pulverization of existing pavement, aggregate surface, and aggregate base materials, which then undergo a full-depth reclamation process to create a durable foundation for the new road surface. This eliminates the need to haul away thousands of tons of old road materials, lessening the burden on landfills and also reducing the amount of truck traffic around the repair project. The process simultaneously allows for the reuse of industrial byproducts such as CKD, fly ash, and LKD, and minimizes the need to purchase new aggregate material.

“Our experience with the Glenbrook Countryside road replacement demonstrated the great advantages of the onsite recycling approach,” notes Peter Amarantos, Northfield Township Road District Commissioner. “This is a major step forward for neighborhood residents, taxpayers, and the environment. We believe that our future projects will exceed the community’s expectations for efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.”
