Understanding AS Social Skills Deficits

Dr. Clatch writes about some of the social skills deficits associated with Asperger's Syndrome.

The social challenges that individuals with Asperger’s face are often quite difficult to overcome. This is because people with this condition often miss subtle social cues that are vital to the success of interpersonal relationships. Individuals with Asperger’s may fail to recognize when a significant other is in emotional distress. This can be frustrating for the person in distress, leading to problems with communication and authentic human connection. In many instances individuals with Asperger’s do not intentionally seek to harm their friends or loved ones. But with the inability to pick up on important interpersonal cues, the end result for many is frustration in building these vital relationships.
