Village of Glenview Purchases Former Bess Hardware Property

Vital spot for redevelopment now in village hands after $2.25 million sale.

GLENVIEW, IL - Village trustees decided to purchase the former Bess Hardware property on Glenview Road.
The village will pay $2.25 million for the property just east of the downtown railroad tracks that has been vacant for six years, according to a Journal & Topics report.

Agreeing to the purchase was not unanimous. Village trustees Scott Britton and John Hinkamp voted against the measure.

Britton alluded to the high cost of the property and the opportunity for the space to be used as affordable or subsidized housing as reasons for dissent.

It’s far from certain exactly what the village plans to do with the more than half-acre space but as preferred concept plan in the works indicates a mixed-use building with about 11,000 square feet of retail space and 27 condominium units.
