Coroner IDs Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting

The shooting early Saturday in Vernon Hills is currently under investigation.

VERNON HILLS, IL — A man killed early Saturday in an officer-involved shooting in Vernon Hills has been identified as Randy Rausch. Preliminary autopsy results show he died of injuries caused by gunshot wounds.

Meanwhile, an invetgation is underway into the incident. Authorities said a Vernon Hills police officer responded to a domestic dispute in the 100 block of Marimac Lane at 1:38 a.m. and found Rausch in a garage and armed with a rifle.

During the encounter, the police officer engaged the man and fired at him,” according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Major Crime Task Force. Rausch was pronounced dead at the scene.

Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said it was not the first time police had been called to the home.

“Officers have been called to the house on numerous occasions throughout the years, for a variety of calls, including several domestic-related incidents,” Covelli told the Daily Herald.

The police officer involved in the shooting was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. He’s been treated and released.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, according to the Daily Herald.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, according to a news release.
