For those deciding to skip the traffic and stay in the Chicago suburbs, there will be plenty of festivals, art shows, farmers markets, entertainment and Memorial Day ceremonies to keep you occupied.

The 50th Annual Car Show-Car Corral and Swap Meet

McHenry County

Family Kite Festival in Crystal Lake

  • When: From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 24
  • Where: Lippold Park Soccer Field, Route 176 in Crystal Lake
  • What: “Kite fest includes performances by Team Chicago Kite, learn-to-fly lessons, family kite fly time, single-line kite flying and the first 350 children will receive a free kite and a learn-to-fly lesson. Keep your eyes to the as skies as kites of all sizes will be flying, some as large as 90 feet will be soaring for all to see. Chicago Kite will be on hand for all your kiting needs,” according to the city of Crystal Lake website.

Cook County

The 28th Annual Prairie Arts Festival Fine Art & Fine Craft Exhibition

  • Where: Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center, 101 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg
  • When: From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday
  • What: The festival includes 120 painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers and potters; entertainment on three stages; a food truck court; and children’s art activities. There is free parking and free admission

Go Rockin’ in the Park in Rosemont

  • Where: MB Park, 5501 Park Place, Rosemont
  • When: 7 to 10 p.m. on May 24
  • What: The first of the concerts in this free summer series in Rosemont kicks off with Johnny Russler and The Beach Bum Band. The band plays plenty of Jimmy Buffet favorites as well as Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Paul Simon, Dick Dale and more. There will also be fireworks and food and beverage tents from the restaurants located within MB Park. The festival is located on the green lawn activity area in the center of the Park. There are picnic tables available, however it is suggested people bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Farmers Market and Food Trucks Open in Rolling Meadows

  • When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 23
  • Where: City hall parking lot, 3600 Kirchoff Road in Rolling Meadows
  • What: The Farmers and Food Trucks Market opens for the summer season this Memorial Day weekend. The market will include fresh-grown produce and a variety of food trucks for visitors to sample different cuisine. The market will also include health and beauty products, children’s attractions, handmade jewelry, clothing and art and more.

Family Field Day at St. James Farm

  • When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 25
  • What: The event features horse and canine performances, tractor and hybrid-vehicle displays, dairy demonstrations and children’s activities, including archery, fishing and hay-wagon rides. This free, family-oriented event attracts over 5,000 visitors.

Edgar WInter & Rick Derringer at the Arcadia Theatre

  • What: “One of our favorite Rock n’ Roll packages here at The Arcada Theatre!
