40 College of Lake County Students Awarded for Academic Performance
The students received awards at the Honors Convocation on April 22

βThe Honors Convocation is truly one of my favorite events during the academic year. The students really value and appreciate being recognized as outstanding scholars, and the honors convocation is an opportunity to celebrate our studentsβ success,β said Dr. Rich Haney, provost.
Following Dr. Haneyβs address, faculty and staff announced the names of the individual winners from their respective academic programs. The total includes more than 20 students who received the Academic Excellence Award. Criteria vary among departments, based on high grade point average and a combination of leadership skills, perseverance, interest in the field and other factors.
CLC 2016 Academic Excellence Award recipients:
- Accounting: Bryan Bonato, Waukegan; Karen Chauvin, Gurnee.
- Administrative Office Systems: Justine Briggs, Antioch; Cheryl Mangold, Vernon Hills.
- Business Administration: Linda Starkey, Wauconda.
- Computer Information Technology: Christopher Bauer and Michael Curry, Grayslake.
- Criminal Justice: Brian Bradel, Libertyville.
- Fire Science Technology: John Kelly, Skokie.
- Health Information Technology (Edna K. Huffman Scholarship Award): Michael Mertz, Buffalo Grove.
- Hospitality and Culinary Management: Christine Heckmann, Island Lake; Connor McNeil, Waukegan; Jovahnny Montes De Oca Hernandez, Vernon Hills; Stephanie Sagerman, Long Grove.
- Human Services: Jennifer Saye, Lake Villa.
- Paralegal Studies: Sean Bourke, McHenry; Amy Felton Brown, Libertyville; Heather Marlier, Antioch; Mimi Mitchell, Gurnee; Christina Pearson, Round Lake; ReneΓ© Sanderson, Ringwood; Angela Truesdale, Wauconda.
- Social Sciences (Frederick M. Patterson Award): Mary Grace Garin Juance, Round Lake.
In addition to the Academic Excellence Award winners, the recipients of the other awards include the following:
- CLC Federation of Teachers Perseverance Award: Carina Delevega, Libertyville; Mason Hoy, Ingleside.
- CLC Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Award: Ansuman Mishra, Gurnee; Isabella Pereira, Long Grove.
- Cooperative Education Student of the Year: Lydia Trusty, Lindenhurst.
- Excellence in Forensics Award: Ryan Haass, Vernon Hills; Emily Ogg, Winthrop Harbor.
- Honors Scholar medals: Betty Derza, Round Lake; Connor Mallon, Grayslake; Hannah Cassiday, Spring Grove; Hannah Urban, Lindenhurst; Kari Ortegel, Ingleside.
- International Student Achievement Award: Javier Lara Cartagena, Mundelein.
- Internship Student of the Year: Denval Hogg, Waukegan.
- Phi Theta Kappa All-Illinois Academic Team Award: Cristian Carillo and Rachel Le, both of Gurnee.
- Phoebe Boyd Art Scholarship: Geovanni Gonzalez, Highwood.
- Wilmot Prize for Excellence in Mathematics: Oscar Araiza Bravo, Mundelein.
Additionally, two students (Ron Ballok, Waukegan and Christiane Laskowski, Lake Zurich) received Lake County Art League scholarships, while two (Michele Kolf, Grayslake and Andrew Spahn, Round Lake) received honorable mentions.
Among all CLC students completing at least 45 credit hours, with a minimum of six credit hours completed in 2015, 85 students received Outstanding Scholar Awards for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, and 248 students received Certificates of Academic Distinction for attaining a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99, Dr. Haney noted.
In addition, 300 students were recently welcomed into CLCβs chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. Students are invited to participate after achieving a 3.5 GPA after taking 12 credit hours at CLC.
