5 Children Rescued From Abuse, Exploitation In Lake County In 2025: Authorities
The Lake County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Team also arrested 13 alleged predators last year, police said Tuesday.
LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Team made strides in protecting children from online exploitation and abuse in 2025, rescuing five children and arresting 13 alleged predators, police said Tuesday.
Last year, the sheriff's office received more than 90 tips through the National ICAC Task Force, highlighting a wide range of child exploitation concerns. These investigations often involve immediate threats to children, including active exploitation, police said.
“Behind every image and every case file is a real child enduring unimaginable abuse. The work our cybercrime investigators do is difficult and often heartbreaking, but it is absolutely critical," Lake
County Sheriff John Idleburg said. "In 2025 alone, our team helped rescue multiple children from continued exploitation. That is exactly why we do this work: to protect the innocent and stop predators before they can harm another child.”

- Deceptive online tactics used to lure children
The Sheriff’s ICAC Team has made 13 arrests in connection with these cases, with charges filed including possession and distribution of CSAM, grooming and indecent solicitation. Further arrests are expected as several investigations are still ongoing, police said Tuesday.

Among the most significant achievements in 2025 was the rescue of five children from ongoing abuse and exploitation.
"These investigations require painstaking work, often involving the review of thousands of images and videos," police said on Tuesday." Some cases even require the examination of tens of thousands of files. To assist in this challenging work, the Sheriff’s Office employs an electronic detection canine, K9 Enzo, who is specially trained to locate hidden electronic storage devices, further enhancing the team’s capabilities."
The ICAC team works closely with a variety of partners, including the Illinois Attorney General’s ICAC Task Force, the Illinois Attorney General’s Digital Forensics Division, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center, according to the news release
"This collaboration ensures thorough investigations and child-sensitive interviews when necessary," sheriff's office officials said.
In addition to enforcement actions, the sheriff’s Office has also been proactive in educating the community. Throughout 2025, the team conducted multiple internet safety presentations in local schools, teaching students about online risks and prevention strategies.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the “Take It Down” program, operated by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The program assists in the removal or prevention of online sharing of nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit images involving minors. More information can be found at takeitdown.ncmec.org.
