Meet The Newest K-9 Officer In Lake County

ROUND LAKE, IL — The village of Round Lake Police Department has added a new K-9 officer to its patrol operations: Valor, a 1-year-old German Shepherd who will serve alongside Officer Nelson Rodriguez.

Valor and Officer Rodriguez recently completed hundreds of hours of training and have earned their official certification, clearing the way for the team to begin active duty within the department’s patrol section, according to a news release from the Round Lake Police Department.

The K-9 team underwent an eight-week intensive certification program that included both classroom instruction and hands-on field training.

Topics covered deployment standards, canine behavior, legal updates, scenario-based training, problem-solving techniques and real-world applications designed to prepare the team for operational duties in the community, according to the news release.

According to the department, Valor is trained in a range of specialized law enforcement functions, including narcotics detection, tracking missing persons and suspects, article searches and other patrol support tasks.

Police officials said the addition of Valor enhances the department’s public safety capabilities, noting that K-9 units play a key role in assisting with searches, suspect apprehensions, narcotics investigations and other critical incidents.
