LAKE COUNTY, IL — A Round Lake Beach man fatally shot his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend during a confrontation Sunday night and then attempted to shoot the woman before fleeing, prosecutors said.
Juan U. Lopez-Aguayo, 26, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder after the shooting that killed Kevin Rodriguez-Ruiz, 31, of Round Lake Park, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner is reporting.
Police said officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to the 1200 block of Sunnyside Court, where Rodriguez-Ruiz was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and later died at Advocate Condell Medical Center.
According to prosecutors, Rodriguez-Ruiz and his girlfriend were sitting in a vehicle on Sunnyside Court when Lopez-Aguayo arrived to provide child support funds for a child he shared with the woman. Prosecutors said Rodriguez-Ruiz got out of the vehicle and briefly spoke with Lopez-Aguayo before Lopez-Aguayo allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
He then pointed the gun at his ex-girlfriend and pulled the trigger but the gun did not fire, according to the article.
Lopez-Aguayo was arrested early Monday morning in southern Illinois. On Thursday, a Lake County judge granted prosecutors' request to keep Lopez-Aguayo in custody while he awaits trial, according to the Daily Herald.
During the detention hearing, prosecutors argued Lopez-Aguayo posed a danger to the community and was a flight risk after allegedly fleeing Lake County following the shooting.
