After Grayslake Stabbing, 2 Hospitals Placed On Lockdown: Prosecutors

GRAYSLAKE, IL — A Grayslake man is facing felony charges after prosecutors allege he stabbed his wife in the knee during a domestic dispute and told her, "I'm going to kill you."

Matthew A. Bruno, 44, is charged with aggravated domestic battery causing great bodily harm, a Class 2 felony, and aggravated battery involving a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony, according to court records.

The charges stem from an Aug. 21 incident at a home in Grayslake.

According to a petition filed by the Lake County State's Attorney's Office, police were initially dispatched to the home after a 911 hang-up call. Bruno allegedly told a Grayslake police detective that the family dog had gotten out and that police were no longer needed.

The 911 call had reportedly been made by the couple's son after the boy heard the victim scream and tell him to call 911, according to prosecutors.

Later that day, Vernon Hills police notified Grayslake police that a Vernon Hills teacher was being taken to Highland Park Hospital after being stabbed. A coworker of the woman told police that she had been stabbed during a domestic incident at home and was "gushing blood," prosecutors said.

The victim told police she and Bruno had been arguing that morning after she told him she planned to leave him, according to the detention petition.

She said Bruno left the home and returned later, when the argument resumed. During the confrontation, Bruno allegedly threatened to kill her, picked up a knife and stabbed her in the right knee.

The victim told investigators Bruno then bandaged the wound, and she went to work, according to court documents.

Hospital personnel determined the stabbing had torn tendons in the woman's knee and that she would need surgery, according to prosecutors. She was transferred from Highland Park Hospital to Endeavor Health Skokie Hospital for the procedure.

Both hospitals were placed on soft lockdown because of concerns about the defendant's whereabouts and the potential threat to the victim, prosecutors said.

Bruno was taken into custody and a judge has ordered he remain detained as court proceedings move forward. He is next expected in court on Thursday.
