Grayslake Apartment Fire Leaves 12 Families Without Homes

GRAYSLAKE, IL — Twelve families were left without homes after a fire ripped through a Grayslake apartment complex Thursday morning, fire officials said.

The fire broke out around 6:55 a.m. Thursday at Grays Pointe Apartments in the 1900 block of Country Drive, according to a news release from the Grayslake Fire Protection District.

When firefighters arrived, they found fire showing from the roof of the three-story apartment building, officials said.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading further through the attic space. Crews searched the building, including all 25 apartments, and evacuated the residents, according to the fire district.

Twelve apartments were deemed uninhabitable, leaving the residents of those units without a place to live. The American Red Cross responded to assist five families with temporary housing, while seven other families chose to stay with relatives, officials said.

The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to the building and its contents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
