Bicyclist Hit, Killed By Train In Grayslake: Officials

The incident happened Tuesday night in Grayslake, Metra officials said.

GRAYSLAKE, IL — Metra officials said they have limited information available about Tuesday night's fatal crash involving a bicyclist and a train in Grayslake, as the investigation remains ongoing.

According to Metra spokesperson Meg Reile, the incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. near the railroad crossing at Lake Street and Hillside Avenue and involved a Canadian National freight train.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the woman who was killed. Reile said Metra Police are investigating the incident but are forwarding their findings to the Lake County Coroner's Office, which will serve as the primary source for information regarding the victim.

The crossing at Lake Street is equipped with gates and warning devices, according to Metra. However, the tracks are owned and maintained by Canadian National Railway, not Metra.

"These tracks are owned and maintained by the CN," Reile said. "Metra operates on that line through a purchase-of-service agreement."

Because the train involved was operated by Canadian National, Metra officials said they do not have access to information regarding the actions of the train crew or engineer.

The incident did not affect Metra's North Central Service schedule. Reile said the final Metra train of the day had passed through the area more than 30 minutes before the collision occurred.

Metra officials also said they are not aware of any previous safety concerns at the crossing, though responsibility for the tracks and crossing infrastructure rests with Canadian National.

The railroad crossings at Lake Street and Hillside Avenue and Center Street in downtown Grayslake were temporarily closed following the incident and drivers were urged to use alternate routes, according to a post on the Grayslake Police Department Facebook page.

The investigation remains ongoing.
