CLC Celebrates the Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

College of Lake County (CLC) is joining Illinois and the rest of the country in celebrating Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Week from Sept. 19-23 to make the public aware of the importance and need for adult education.

In Lake County, 10% of the population 25 years and older does not have a high school diploma and 28% five years and older speak a language other than English.

“AEFL Week is a great reminder of the many adults who need basic educational services in order to live in our society,” said Adult Education Instructor Mary Lynn Carver. “Sharing these resources that are available in the county is an opportunity to spread awareness of how limiting lack of language and education can be. We are so fortunate to have the programs in Lake County to provide these resources and classes."

CLC’s Adult Education and ESL Division will be kicking off the week with a welcome event celebrating success in the field and engaging in activities that will raise the visibility of its collective work in the field of adult education.

Throughout the week, all three of CLC’s campuses will host book drives with Bernie’s Book Bank.

From 12-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, the Adult Education and ESL Division will collaborate to provide a Zoom brown bag lunch panel discussion with speakers from United Way of Lake County and the Waukegan Public Library to provide information to the community and raise awareness of services and resources available in Lake County.
