CLC Theatre Presents Oedipus Rex

From CLC Theatre: The College of Lake County Theatre Department presents the Greek drama “Oedipus Rex” Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m.; and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. Additionally, a high-school matinee will take place Friday, March 8 at 10 a.m. on CLC’s Grayslake Campus. While his city suffers from plague and ruin, Oedipus stands firm—a proud king who seems to have nothing to fear. Oedipus must solve the mystery of who murdered the previous king to save his city, and he is determined that no one will stand in his way. But in seeking the truth, his own worst nightmares come to light. Written by Sophocles, ‘Oedipus Rex’ is considered to be the greatest of all Greek plays, said Craig Rich, chair of CLC’s theatre department and director of the play. The CLC production is using a modern translation, by Stephen Berg and Diskin Clay, which was hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “daring and experimental.” Rich said, “The message of the drama feels so timely. ‘Oedipus Rex’ explores the relationship between a king and his people. Oedipus wants to save his people, but his over-confidence, paranoia and obsession brings about a tragic end. Audiences will find this play incredibly moving because it still has the power to shake us to our core.”
