β€œThe Latinx Heritage Month is a great opportunity for CLC to recognize the contributions of Latinx in our community and to discuss how we can eliminate the systematic disparities in all communities, especially Latinx communities,” said Rodolfo Ruiz-Velasco, Latinx student outreach and programs coordinator. β€œBy celebrating Latinx Heritage Month we are sending a clear message to our Latinx students: β€˜You are welcome here.’”

During the month, the Independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, MΓ©xico and Chile are all celebrated.

As a Hispanic Serving Institution, 39 percent of CLC’s student body identifies as Latinx.

Numerous events open to the public are slated for the month-long celebration, in-person and virtual. These include:

  • An evening with Erika SΓ‘nchez, author of β€œI Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter”
  • Learning about the diverse Latinx communities living in the United States today
  • Latinx psychologists Arellys Aguinaga and Glorivette Albino talking about what impacts Latinx college students’ mental health
  • The documentary β€œSinging our way to Freedom” about Ramon β€œChunky” Sanchez
  • Cooking lessons with Don Luis
  • A virtual event about Afro/Black Latinx people with Rosa Clemente
