District 46 Students Advance To National MathCON Finals

Congrats to the local students.

GRAYSLAKE, IL - From Community Consolidated School District 46: Three students from Frederick School in Grayslake, IL, have qualified to compete in the National MathCON 2018 Finals in Chicago, IL, on May 5, 2018, at the University of Chicago (UIC) Forum.

More than 50,000 students from across the nation in grades 5-12 including home-schooled, charter, public, and private school students competed in the online competition held from January 22 to March 2. Of the competitors, 576 students are invited to advance to the finals where they will be going head-to-head in a 90-minute timed test with 70 questions including multiple choice and constructed response. The MathCON competition questions include several mathematical disciplines including algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, number systems, and pre-calculus.

Among the 576 finalists chosen were three sixth grade students from Frederick School – Aidan Kim, Kevin Meyer, and Mihir Tandon. Additionally, two fifth grade students, Seth Albert and Jack Mudd, along with one sixth grade student Ethan Santner were chosen as runner-ups and may compete if any of the original finalists are unable to participate.

“We’re so incredibly proud when any of our students earn recognition for their accomplishments, and we’re so excited to have Mihir, Kevin, and Aidan representing Frederick School and advancing to the finals,” Principal Eric Detweiler said. “The STEM field is such an important part of the future, and we actively encourage our teachers and students to find fun ways to use STEM inside and outside of the classroom. This is a great honor not only for Kevin, Aidan, and Mihir, but also for Frederick.”

The day-long finals event will bring together elementary, middle, and high school students to compete for various prizes and national prestige through various math questions and activities. In addition to the finals testing, students at this year’s competition will enjoy a mathematics magic show by renowned magician, Tom London-Tech Magician, a variety of interactive mathematics games, entertainment by Chicago DJ Ryan and a pizza party with other participants. At Finals, the National Finalists (top students in each grade 5-12) will receive a cash prize of $300. The Gold medal winners will receive $200; Silver medal winners will win $100; Bronze medal winners will be awarded $50. This year, the top 576 student finalists are representing 29 states and are traveling from as far away as California, New York, Alaska and Rhode Island.

MathCON is a nonprofit national mathematics organization recognized for its annual student mathematics competition for students in grades 5-12, with more than 200,000 student participants since 2008. Students from charter, public, and private schools, as well as individual students are eligible to compete in MathCon.

Community Consolidated School District 46 is located in northeastern Illinois in central Lake County, approximately forty (40) miles north of Chicago and fourteen (14) miles west of Lake Michigan. CCSD 46 serves parts of the villages of Grayslake, Third Lake, Hainesville, Round Lake, Round Lake Park, Round Lake Beach, and Lake Villa.

The district is comprised of seven schools. Four kindergarten through fourth-grade neighborhood schools – Avon Center, Meadowview, Prairieview and Woodview, one kindergarten through eighth-grade neighborhood school – Park Campus, one fifth and sixth-grade intermediate school – Frederick, and one seventh and eighth-grade middle school – Grayslake Middle School.
