Do Grayslake Elementary Students Need More Recess?

A grassroots group of local parents are urging school officials to implement daily recess for District 46 students.

GRAYSLAKE, IL - A group of District 46 parents are fighting for more outdoor play during the school day for local elementary school students.

A grassroots group, D46 Parents For Regular Recess, appeared before the District 46 school board this past week to present their case and urge school officials to consider allowing 30 minutes of recess every day for children, according to the Daily Herald. Currently, students get two 15-minute recesses per week.

The group started an online petition earlier this month and collected 100 signatures in five days from others who support their cause. As of Friday, the petition has collected a total of 272 signatures.

β€œStudies have shown that daily outdoor play is vital to children's development and can actually help them to learn. D46 children do not receive daily recess and outdoor time is grossly limited,” according to the online petition.

The District 46 board heard from parents of the pro-recess group at their Wednesday meeting but did not take any action, the Daily Herald reports. School officials said they will read over reports submitted by the parents from medical experts and review the online petition.
